Performance Car Racing Has Come A Long Way Since Its Inception

Hence, a civilian market was carved out in order to sustain the racing car programme.

The popularity of performance car racing went through a topsy-turvy phase in the next three decades. Car companies were trying hard to deliver performance both on the racing circuit as well as on the roads. However, the 1990s witnessed a rebirth and revival of performance car racing.

Today, there are many popular tournaments of performance car racing. They are 24 Hours of Le Mans, 24 Hours of Spa-Franchorchamps, 24 Hours of Daytona, 1000-mile Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta and 12 Hours of Sebring, apart from the usual Formula series of races, Nascar tournaments, etc.

There are many kinds of sports cars used in performance car racing. These cars can be divided into two broad categories. These categories are Sports-prototype and Grand Touring.

A Sports-Prototype is a type of car specially designed for racing. The sports car prototypes offer the next level of automotive design and technological leap. These sports car prototype are considered to be pinnacle of racing-car design.

The most popular models of sports prototypes are the Mercedes CLK-GTR, Porsche 911 GT1-98, Dauer-Porsche 962LM, and the Toyota GT-One. There are also some Honda car racing models and Ford mustang car racing models. These models are very much popular among the sports car racing enthusiasts.
